About the work

Kate is an artist, curator and producer who’s intrinsic interests remain embedded in our world and how we structure it.

Working in a variety of media, from illustration to installation, her projects often reflect an aspect of society, from her 'small wonderments' and ideas of intrigue, to spontaneous drawings that capture the idiosyncrasies of modern day life.

She see’s her practise as a form of social enquiry, referring to herself as a social investigator – a sort of scientist examining people and social dynamics, and the rules and systems that we live among.

Her investigations highlight our accustomed rules and systems, and transpire in multi-layered and often humorous end points. Large scale installation and live art are used as mechanisms to raise queries that stem from how the self sits within its social and physical environment, and how we deal with the tensions this creates. Interaction is often an important component of the installations, and where the audience is invited to take part, touch, play.

In 2005 ‘View’ sought to consolidate a wider philosophy on social and political structures. An immersive installation, View invited the audience to queue for a view and become an authorised viewer of the landscape, whilst at the same time asking the viewer to reconsider their journey through the ticketing system.

The drawings reveal simple studies of the everyday that are sometimes forgotten in our chaotic lives, and a sense of awareness of the alternative.

Graduating from Camberwell College in 1998 Kate worked for a number of years at The Independent newspaper as a graphic artist, and completed an MA in Art’s Management at City University. She now lives and works as a freelance artist and producer, as well as a business adviser and Editor for a-n’s Jobs&Opps website from her base in Cumbria.
